Meet Mrs.Loretta McConnor…

I am the Meadows Valley School librarian, and Ialso teach Horticulture and Yearbook. I have been teaching at Meadow Valley for twenty-eight years. I was born in Salt Lake City, but lived in Palatine, Illinois, for 1½ years, then San Carlos, California for 2½ years.  I moved back to Salt Lake where I attended junior high and high school. I grew up in a large family of seven children. In school I was involved in Art, Pep Club, the Marching Squad, and was the Student Body Secretary my senior year. I graduated from Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City in 1973.

I earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Utah State University, in Logan, Utah in 1978.  I worked my way through college as a seasonal employee of the Forest Service on the Bridger -Teton in Wyoming.  After graduation,  I moved to Salmon, Idaho, where I worked for the Forest Service on the Challis and the Salmon forests. In 1982, I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Idaho. I have endorsements in General Science and Media.

I am married to Sean McConnor who is a painting contractor. We have two sons: Liam and Brendan.  Liam graduated from MVHS in 2008 and is attending Central Oregon Community College in Bend, Oregon. Our youngest son, Brendan, graduated from MVHS in 2010 and is attending University of Idaho in Moscow.

My favorite activities include quilting, gardening, doing crafts, hiking, reading, being in the outdoors, and traveling. Our travels have taken us to places like Ireland, Costa Rica, Alaska, and the Southwest desert.

Some of my favorite books are The Education of Little Tree, The Life of Pi, The Power of One and my favorite authors include Maeve Binchy, Diana Gabaldon, Jody Picoult, Douglas Preston, and J.K. Rowling.

My favorite quote is from Henry David Thoreau. “If you want inner peace, find it in solitude, not speed.  And if you would find yourself, look to the land from which you came and to which you go.”

My favorite quote for Meadows Valley students is a Native American proverb…

“If we wonder often, the gift of knowledge will come.”   Never let that inborn ‘sense of wonder’ fizzle.  Always strive to learn something new everyday no matter your age.  Ask lots of questions and become a lifelong learner. Share what you learn and instill that love of learning in others: your children, your friends, your parents, your siblings, and your classmates.  Most important of all, read, read, read!!!”
