Horticulture:

Course Description: This course will assist students in learning the essential information needed to explore the exciting field of horticultural science.  One of the most rapid growth areas in the field of agriculture is that of horticulture.  This new-found interest is due to increasing awareness by the public, as people look inwardly at a need to be closer to nature and outwardly at a world in which efficient methods of food production and conservation of land are increasingly important.

 

Class Weighting Procedure

Homework and Labs----47%  Late homework will lose 50% if it’s turned in one day late.  After

that, no credit will be given.

 

Tests-----------------------40%  Tests will be given following the end of each  2 or 3 units.

 

Quizzes--------------------10%  Quizzes may be unannounced; will be worth 10-30                   points.

 

Mini-reports----------------3%  A mini-report is at least one full page written on any  subject related to horticulture.  You may do up to four each nine weeks, but are only required to do one.  The       rest will count as extra credit.  These are to be written in your own words, not cut and pasted from the Internet.  In other words, do not plagiarize. Use 12pt. type and double-space between lines.

 

Grading Procedure

 

90 – 100 A

80 – 89   B

70 – 79    C

60 – 69   D

Below 60 F

 

Evaluation- Grades will be based on your performance on tests, assignments, labs, and mini-reports.

Yearbook:

Course Description: This course involves producing the student newspaper, and the parent newsletter.  Students will be responsible for taking pictures, interviewing people, collecting and writing original articles for the newspaper. They will then design and layout the paper, print, and distribute it to the school and community.

 

Students will also be responsible for producing the yearbook.  They will take pictures that cover all student functions using a variety of cameras; design the cover, layout the pages on the computer with pictures, text and clip art, print the pages on the color printer, and assemble the books at the end of the year.

 

Course Objectives: 

1.  Students will produce a newspaper that is timely, informative, entertaining, and covers major events at Meadows Valley School.

2.  Students will learn aspects of layout and design for the newspaper, newsletter, and the yearbook.

3.  Students will meet deadlines for all publications in a consistent manner.

4.  Students will be able to use cameras (digital, point and shoot) to record the activities that take place throughout the school year.

 

Weighting procedure: Yearbook- 40% Pages are complete- all pictures present, all text in place (headlines on each page, people identified in captions, all students included), all pages are turned in on time.

 

Newspaper / newsletter- 40% Articles are well written with proper grammar rules applied; are not plagiarized; articles turned in on time.

 

Participation- 20% Each student will contribute a minimum number of articles to each publication.  Occasionally there is down time after a deadline is met.  Students will be expected to use this time constructively.

80 - 89     B

70 - 79     C                      

60 - 69     D
