Horticulture and science students went on a field trip Wednesday,
Oct. 21, to Four Mile Creek, north of Meadows Valley, to do willow weaving on a stretch of the creek. Willow weaving
is done on creek banks to help stabilize the soil. Willow branches were cut from one site and hauled to the creek by
Idaho Fish and Game personnel. Branches were hauled to the various bends in the creek. Stakes were cut from the
larger branches and pounded into the edge of the creek then longer willow branches were woven around the stakes to create
a living fence. The willows will take root in the banks and help protect them from further erosion. This keeps
sediments off the bottom of the creek so fish can lay their eggs in gravel; the willow shrubs will provide shade for the fish
and help keep temperatures lower for aquatic organisms.
